Information for Customers

The Tasmanian State Government with the support of Local Government are introducing wide-ranging structural and regulatory reforms that will see improved and long lasting change in the delivery of water and sewerage services in Tasmania.

For you and your family this means that you will be able to expect better water quality, improved services throughout Tasmania and an assurance that you will have the water resources and infrastructure that you will need in future years.

What is needed for Tasmania?

With these reforms Tasmania’s water will be managed in a transparent and efficient manner.

Capital investment for the sector will also be addressed by the creation of new water and sewerage companies that will have enough financial strength to raise the capital needed and get the work done.

For Tasmania to achieve a sustainable water and sewerage sector we are addressing the structural, regulatory and legislative framework so that our communities receive the services they need.

What it means for you

A sustainable sector

A new era of strategic management of our water and sewerage services is being introduced that will ensure improvement and ongoing maintenance of our vital infrastructure and far less duplication between activities.

Better community outcomes

Tasmania ’s prosperity is linked with the availability of water and sewerage infrastructure that can meet our needs.  Good water quality is important to all Tasmanian communities for economic development.

Customer protections

For the first time all Tasmanian ’s will be able to expect customer service standards and state-wide consistent pricing arrangements linked to the level of services provided.

The ombudsman’s role has also been expanded to help resolve water and sewerage complaints between customers and the new businesses.

Health and environmental concerns will be addressed

The water and sewerage sector is vital to Tasmania ’s health and environmental outcomes and has an impact on the lifestyle and well being of all Tasmanians.  Reform will work to ensure first world environmental and health standards are met. It is clearly in everyone’s interest that water is safe to drink and sewage is disposed of effectively.

Fairer pricing for all Tasmanians

The method used by the new businesses to work out customer charges will be consistent across the State, will be clearly linked to the level of service provided and will be set through a transparent and independent process.

Currently there is no consistent pricing approach in Tasmania, particularly for water.  Some prices are based on property values, some on pipe size, and many areas do not charge based on the amount of water consumed.

Local Government will ensure that financial help is available for low income earners to minimise any possible price increase impacts.

Water is strategically important to Tasmania and must be managed so

A plan for Tasmania has been developed that will meet the growing challenges of our water and sewerage sector, improve services and allow for the development of vital infrastructure. Tasmania’s ongoing economic development and prosperity is linked to this plan.
